Sutton Named MVP for 2008
To be honored in Houston September 27
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Infielder Drew Sutton has been tabbed as the Most Valuable Player for the Hooks in 2008. That announcement was made this week by the Houston Astros Player Development Department.
Sutton, who became the first “20-20” player in Hooks’ history when he clubbed his 20th home run and stole his 20th base in the second game of a doubleheader August 31 at San Antonio, led the Hooks and finished sixth in the Texas League with his .317 batting average. His average was also tops among all Houston farmhands.
Sutton, in his second season with the club, led the league in hits (165), doubles (39) and runs (102), becoming the first player in team history to score 100 or more runs. He also finished third in the Texas League in on-base percentage (.408) and third in slugging percentage (.523).
The former Baylor Bear played in the Texas League All-Star Game and was the only Corpus Christi player chosen for the circuit’s Post-Season All-Star Team. Sutton also established eight individual Hooks’ records this year, setting three single-season marks and five career records.
Sutton achieved new single-season highs in doubles, walks (76) and runs. He also became Corpus Christi’s career leader in runs (183), doubles (67), walks (133), games (261) and RBI’s (122).
Sutton and the seven other affiliate MVP’s will be recognized during a special ceremony before the Astros-Braves game at Minute Maid Park on Saturday, September 27. That game is slated to get under way at 6:05 p.m.
