From My Blog.

Howdy all. As Hurricane Ike bears down on Texas, I can't help but feel great sympathy for those who are driving through or to our neck of the woods to find relief from Ike. These folks are stressed and worried, tired and unsure. These are our brothers and sisters, friends and family. If you happen to run across a "refugee" from down south, consider taking the time do something nice for them. Welcome them to Waco and let them know that you care. Give them a smile and some gentle reassurance. Say hello. Pat them on the back. Maybe even buy them a meal. Their resources are being consumed faster than ours locally. Let them use your cell phone to tell a relative that they are safe. Pray for them. Care.

Be a good host if you get the chance. They may one day be in a position to help you, or someone else when they remember the time when a kind stranger in Central Texas took the time to lend a hand.

May His blessings be with all who are affected by Ike in all ways. May God's love and grace bless each one of you.

Amen brother!

We held an auction at our meeting last night where one of our vendors had donated a bunch of stuff that we usually give away. The zone VP decided that instead of raffle it off we would auction it off. We have a fund set up for this sort of disaster relief effort so we can take care of our employees. We have some that will surely be in some straights with stores in Galveston, Texas City, League City, etc and all over Houston.

We auctioned a bunch of stuff but one thing really struck me. Our DM from Utah paid $400 for an item and when he went to pick it up, he donated it back to the cause and had it auctioned off again, essentially just donating $400 bucks. There was another guy in the crowd who really wanted it and the DM from Utah took the auction up to $500 this time. When he won the auction (the second time) he went up, collected it...and gave it to the other guy who REALLY wanted the item.

It is a nice reminder that if we take care of people everyone wins.

Best of all, last night on the news, Mayor Ray Nagin said Houston had been so nice to the people of New Orleans that he was inviting Houstonians to weather out the storm there, as a matter of reciprocation (though I think we all know he didn't use the word reciprocation, BID) and all you had to do was ask for the Ray Nagin Special. I called Wacoso and told him and left it to him to decide what the Ray Nagin Special was.

I am closer and promise my deal is better than Ray Nagin. We have two empty bedrooms and lots of room. My parents have three empty bedrooms and even more room. We are between Temple and Waco and would welcome anyone that needs help.

I hear LIQR will even offer any aggs in need a goat for the night.

Our church was activated a few days ago as a shelter, but then when the storm shifted we were told we wouldn't be needed. They seem to have things in hand.

Wow! Come spend some time and money with us. We still aren't on our feet yet, so we may just have to mug ya.

There was a newspaper article today about how confused hotel clerks were when evacuees came in asking for the "Nagin Special." Some folks took him literally. I'm sure they weren't amused by his joke.

I figure the Ray Nagin Special consisted of 4 speeding tickets, two flat tires, one busted out headlight, $8 gas, and a rock hard mattress in Bunkie, LA.

Our refugees left yesterday. It was fun having little kids in the house.
