BabyATX is ready to start filling her passport. http://www.lincon.com/nps/images/nps_passport.gif
If you were planning a trip to start out of Dallas and go anywhere from there for a total of 12 days, which direction would you head, and how many days would you spend in each location?

Perfect time of the year to be on the East Coast.
I'm leaving for Chincoteague Virginia Friday Week. I'll follow the leaves south for a couple of weeks, then end up back here toward the end of the month. Nothing like being on the beach one day, and the mountains the next. The Reds, Yellows, and Oranges should be good this year. I'm so pumped, I can hardly wait.

Good time to go to Colorado too. Lots of parks there, and just about anything you can think of to do.

It's hard to drive without gas Donnie. ;)
I'd drop down I-35 and hit up Perdenales Falls near Austin, swing over to the Big Thicket, make the jump into the Sam Houston National Forest and the Davy Crockett National forest, visit historic Nacogdoches and make your way into Tyler and on home. That would take up your days and give Baby ATX a nice booklet and her parents great memories. If you can work in Frederickburg you get bonus points. Great food, museums, people and city.
There are plenty of parks etc out West but it is hot. You could leave the state and go north or over to Colorado and New Mexico. The Sandia mountains are great this time of year near Albuquerque or Santa Fe. If you go northeast, target Bull Shoals reservoir and all the historic parks in Arkansas and Missouri. Branson is a really nice family destination and is tucked away in beautiful country.
I really enjoyed heading out east and hitting up all of the historic battlegrounds in places like Vicksburg. Beautiful country and a ton of history. If you had more time I would send you up near Washington DC.

I should have also clarified... we are looking to do the trip in March or April of next year.

One thing about leaving Big D. You can get a lot of places in 12 hours.
When I get where I'm going, I might not see an Interstate for a week or more. Love me some Back Roads across America. :)
Think of the things you can eat. That's how I plan my trips. :) My first stop will be Big Fat Crabcakes!!!

Great suggestions. I will be keeping Texas secure for long weekend trips, as to not waste long vacation chances with things that could be done on a 4 day weekend (even if it took 5 of them).
MrsATX has been to 48 states (missing Alaska and Delaware).
I have been to 49 (just missing Alaska).
BabyATX has already been to 4 (TOLA), unless you count in utero, then she has been to several countries.

Sounds like Salmon fishing in Alaska is in order then.

If you're looking for nature, then it would be a fun road trip to head up through New Mexico and Colorado to Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. That might be a little bit far though for 12 days. You could also drive through the mountains in New Mexico on your way to the Grand Canyon, with possibilities to head north to Utah and check out Zion National Park.
I'm a huge fan of the Western United States, so I don't really have any great suggestions heading East. Maybe a couple of days in the Appalachians with a trip down to the Florida Panhandle to hit some beach.

MrsATX is missing out on tax free shopping (on everything.) Plus you can do DE in a matter of hours if you wanted. They only have three counties.

I'm scheduling a road trip to D.C. next month. I think I'll stop in S. Carolina for a little golf with a buddy if he's available.

Just need to work out a date. If I'm not home, our paths should cross somewhere over here near a course. I'll be up that way most of the month off & on.
