Posted this on the other site but figure I might as well post it here.
I need to go to from Waco to Baton Rouge this weekend and was wondering if anyone knew of a better way to go than traveling all the way down to Houston and then taking I-10. There has to be some smaller highways or something that go through East Texas right?

Why would you want to go on smaller highways through all of the small towns? It would be much quicker to go over to I-45 down and around Houston to I-10.

Take 190 from Huntsville through East Texas, takes you into Opelousas, LA. Have taken this route many times with our motorhome towing the Tahoe with no problem. Went this way because of I-10 being so rough from Tx to Lafayatte, LA. 190 is a good road and with a car you should make good time. I believe that there is still construction in Beaumont that could possibly tie you up for a couple of hours. Last time through there, took us over two hours to get through Beaumont.
Safe travels,

Take hw 6 to hwy 7 in Marlin; turn left onto hwy 7 east and proceed through Centerville, across I-45, and on to Crockett; take a right onto Loop 304 just on the outside of Crockett around to hwy 287; take a right on hwy 287 south and follow to woodville; take a right on hwy 69 south and proceed to Beaumont; I-10 from there.
I have made this trip many times in 3 and a half hours to Beaumont going roughly the speed limit.
The 2 main obstacles are prison buses on 7 between Marlin and Centerville and logging trucks on 7 between Crockett and Woodville.
If you encounter many of these, make it 4 hours. Should be another 3 or so from there.
