BIRMINGHAM, Ala — The Baylor men’s golf team opened its season with a victory by claiming the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate on Tuesday at Shoal Creek Country Club.

The Bears fired a 54-hole team score of 16-over-par 880 to edge second-place Mississippi by two strokes.

Baylor’s Colton Williams shot 4-over-par 220, tying for ninth, and Joakim Mikkelsen was another stroke back in a tie for 11th to lead the Bears to their first team championship since last September.

Baylor opened the 2007-08 campaign by winning the team title at the St. Mary’s Invitational last September in Pebble Beach, Calif.

Baylor paved the way to its season-opening win on Monday when it shot even-par 288, the low team round by 10 strokes. The Bears took an 11-stroke edge over Mississippi into the final round on Tuesday and then held off the Rebels.

Baylor’s Bill Allcorn tied for 15th and Cody Paladino tied for 18th to give the Bears four players in the top 20.
