View Full Version : Membership Growth

Not a bug or error, just an idea I didn't know where else to post.

It seems to me that although membership to GGR is growing at a snails pace, the site may well experience so financial difficulty if we don't add more sponsoring members. I conclude that something should be done to spur more interest. Am I wrong?

Guys... as you know, I have always been honest with everyone on the board about financials... so here goes...

All said and done, this board needs $300 a month to cover everything, BB software, server, etc. or $3600 a year.

If we maintained the current number of posters, we could lower the costs a little bit, but not too much.

We currently have about 150 members, and at least 100 post fairly regularly.

If all 100 active posting members donated equally, this board would run at or above current performance for $3/mo.

The idea behind it was to get 10-15 new members to pay a one time $25 dollar fee, but it appears there just are not that many new Baylor fans who are interested in paying first before they know the site and the people.

Having said that... I would love to be in a position where a couple people who are a little better off joined in, and we keep it a free board. As long as the site breaks even, that is what it is all about to me.

ATX and Limnos, send out a call when you need some help with funds.

I'll donate more. Atx, do you have any extra GGR newsletters? The reason I ask is 98% of my office are Baylor alums, which about almost all of them follow Baylor sports (football, basketball, baseball). I could hand a few of them out, along with subscription information if needed.

Frankly... I am about out of contacts to send this site information to... what it takes is someone sending a blast out to the people they know on Facebook, myspace or whatever else to get more people coming to the site...

We just need one good student poster to send out the word :)

Maybe a way to get membership growth would be to get people to start posting on things other than what they are eating for dinner or what they are listening to. Those threads are still fun to read but it seems a little sad when they are two of the most active threads on the site. maybe others would be inclined to join if we are talking about more interesting subjects (sports, what is going on the world, Baylor, etc) instead of what song you currently have on.

I will. Today ended up being a busy day and I have just now sat down and really had a chance to look at the site. However, it irked me when i logged on this morning and the most active threads are the 3 "insider" threads that will not interest people who are visiting the site since they do not really encourage discussion, just chit chat among friends (which i like guys) but I also enjoy the discussions as well.

One thought on this. There are always threads to discuss and people are always starting new ones. I would like to see a little more diverse discussion though. There are numerous threads where it is really a discussion between a few people only. I think more active members would help this. For example i was looking through the member list and there are alot with 0 posts or very few. many of them are active posters on Baylorfans and just need a little encouragement i think to switch sites.

I agree with this, but the bigger problem is--as I have said numerous times--it's a massive circlejerk over here, especially on R&P. Differing ideas are mocked and laughed at by a few posters, and ignored by the majority of the rest. Outside of the usual suspects, people don't really want to dive into a monotonous discussion about the same exact things.

Sports boards are just as bad. Yogi and I were raising concerns about the basketball team in early season, yet we were piled on nonstop until it finally became apparent that we sucked giant wang.

As much as most people here will hate it, controversy and differing opinions are what make a message board. Conflict is interesting. Disagreement is interesting, but all too often it's totally quashed over here. In the case of R&P, it's labelled "socialist." In the case of sports, it's labelled "fairweather." Either way, THAT is the main thing driving this site into the ground. Total lack of interesting discussion.

Some of the folks here still haven't figured it out, but more than anything, I post the things I do simply to be cantankerous, to be different. Sometimes I agree with them, sometimes I don't, but at least I'm not sure "QFT'ing" all the time in agreement.

Differing opinions are always welcome... so are opinions that differ from the differing opinion. The only thing that is not welcome is cursing and personal attacks.

I think alot of it has to do with how touchy the subjects are and how defensive people get which causes it to get very personal very quickly. That and it seems some people do not have very good debating skills.. arguing, yes but not debating.

As for your total lack of interesting discussion I can think of numerous threads where there have been some enjoyable discussions that were extremely interesting to me and some that I have no idea how a thread over nothing reached 10 pages long....

The main reason that I have quit reading/posting so much on BF is the personal attacks that go on over there. Especially on the football board. It seems you cannot have an opinion without someone just flaming you for no reason other than he doesn't agree with you. It really gets tiresome wading thru that stuff to get to a post that actually has something to do with that particular thread.

I have found G&G to be a site where you can have a decent discussion without the whole thing catching on fire. And it's really enjoyable.

Bexar Fan

Agreed, roy. Although there can be some argueing and name calling here, but it is nothing like BFs where some disrupt and put down others as sport.

And I personally think the "What are you listening to?" and "What's for dinner" threads are good easy topics especially for newbees to the site to wade in and get comfortable. I don't think I have ever met anyone here in person yet these types of threads have given me the confidence to "extend my handshake" to new friends.

Those are two of the toughest courses that I've played thus far. I wouldn't drool because that might be giving up some of the beer that I already drank.

I just got confirmation all the tee times. I play Torrey Pines on Sunday, Pebble Beach on Tuesday, Poppy Hills on Wednesday, Spyglass Hill on Thursday, and Spanish Bay on Friday.

ya, no kidding. Work in progress is right. The homepage for the site needs to be updated asap. Reading the board is quite difficult with firefox or IE. It's like everything is repeated over and over again and coding is off for things like smiles, links, etc.

This site was so well moderated and managed before this server change happened. Could the moderators give us an update and is there anything we can do to help? I really feel like this site has great potential but it needs help.
