Kendal Volz tossed seven shutout innings, and Willie Kempf used a triple play to preserve his first save of the season as No. 6 Baylor defeated ninth-ranked UCLA 5-1 in Saturday's second-day action at the Houston College Classic. Baylor (6-1) has won five straight, while UCLA (2-5) has lost five straight.

Solid win. Ace against ace. It was a pitcher's duel for most of the game. Nice showing from both Volz for us and Cole for UCLA. We got into their bullpen and played some good small ball today.

The Baylorbears.com website didn't say how it happened, but the Waco Trib had this:
"Baylor reliever Willie Kempf took advantage of the rarest of defensive gems to help record his first save of the year for the Bears (6-1). In the bottom of the eighth inning, BU first baseman Dustin Dickerson made a diving grab of a Cody Decker liner. Dickerson then threw to shortstop Joey Hainsfurther to double off one UCLA baserunner, and then Hainsfurther threw back to the first-base bag to record the third out. It was Baylor’s first triple play since April 27, 1996, at Rice."

I hadn't seen a triple play before, but it sure was awesome. We needed it with no outs and RISP. Even the Aggies sitting behind us were saying what a great play it was.
