Any chance you'll be setting up a paypal account to get some sponsors?

There will be no sponsors per se as sponsorships evoke a sense of entitlement with some folks. We will eventually have a subscription based system that will be launched soon (I think). Subscriptions will come with a few benefits but no entitlements.

Limnos is correct, we will have a donation opportunity that is in no way related to the board's management policies (the Noel Rule). This is simply a thank you donation, which essentially says you like what we are doing and wish to keep the site afloat by supporting the bandwidth needs.

This should be up by next week.

Thanks for proactively asking.

So, even if I donated a ton of money and wore some sweet man gold I would have no say in how the site is run and could possibly be banned?!?

I could get behind that concept.

Matt, I will proactively ban you before you act out if someone sends me pictures of you in man-gold.

How much mangold? And is it really really sweet mangold or just the mangold of tanning bed enthusiasts?

::banging head::

I feel as though there is only one website on the inter-web, and it's the site that shall not be mentioned.

Sponsorship-based sites work WONDERFULLY well, and it's far and away THE MOST SUCCESSFUL form of funding, period. It's not even close.

Here, I'll give an example.

http://www.talkbass.com

The inter-web's largest bass guitar website. Just over 100K members with a most online of 1,999. Currently just over 600 online at 12:28 am.

100% sponsorship-based. ZERO off-site advertising, and one small box on the left side telling the most recent sponsor and a link to sponsor. The only "perks" are bandwidth-based perks (bigger PM box, larger attachments, etc.). I can't get a count of how many sponsors there are, but there are literally hundreds, and the SMALLEST is $30/year.

I just don't understand this idea that "sponsorship = power." IT DOESN'T UNLESS THE PRECEDENT IS SET THAT IT DOES!!!!!!!! If someone thinks they have power, BAN THEM! I think that gets the point across.

I'll say it again---a mandatory subscription will prohibit this site from reaching the heights we all want it to reach.

Just wanted to know how to help the site, not really looking for entitlements.

BoBB... we will be implementing this very soon. We are in the process of setting up the Paypal account on a term that goes to a LLC instead of a single person to avoid the whole tax implications.

We will have those available at the tailgate. Make sure to pick one up for you and all of your alt-nicks. Every sponsorship will result in the access to a minimum of 8.
