View Full Version : Consider changing non-sports folders?

Okay, it's not an error or bug, however...

Is there any consideration to combining or redefining the non-sports forums? There's some overlap between

--In The News (I mean, about half of the fun/serious threads get their start from a news item.)

--Friends and Family (Most non-serious stories, I'd share with F&F, but are we talking about F&F who are in stories, or F&F on the board?...oh, I don't know.)

--Religion and Politics (This is the most clear-cut one)

--Miscellaneous (I mean, what doesn't fit in the other folders that would fit better in Miscellaneous?)

I'm not bringing this up to be a butt, although constructive griping is consistent with my behavior on other messageboards. It's just that it appears that half of the non-serious stories are in the F&F, and half are in Miscellaneous, with serious/non-serious stories posted in ITN. There's a lot of potential for overlap and that drives me (just me) nuts.

When I read messageboards, I usually dart for specific folders depending on my mood and what time I've got to spend, and I keep feeling as though I have to cover 2-3 folders to find a thread that could qualify for any of them. It would be like having football folders on "Wide Receivers and Quarterbacks," "The Running Game and Screen Passes," "Things the Quarterback Did," and "Offensive Plays."

I know that running a board takes effort, and from the design alone, I assume nothing was done easily or on a whim. If there's a better division of topics or a good rule of thumb to differentiate what should go where, that would be cool.

I am open to suggestions. I tried to add a series of folders that would make several groups happy, as some definitely see the division between serious (R+P) topics, and not so serious topics (F+F). I agree that In the News is sort of a catch all for things that are in the news but not Religious or Political (which is not much these days).

F+F and R+P will stay... would you like Misc and In the News to combine?

Yes. I would actually say to combine F+F, Misc, and ITN, but that's just me. They're all the same, and I'd prefer to click on ONE forum to get all "that" stuff instead of 3 different ones. More forums means less conversation per forum, and truth be told, there's no NEED to separate that stuff. It's all just fun chat (as long as it's not R&P) so the need for divisions isn't really there.

If the folders are being consolidated to two forums, maybe they get moved to the top level instead of being in a subfolder. So, "On Campus" goes away and R&P & F+F being forums on the main page. Less clicks are always good.

Cut my post count in half, but it's all good. At least it was in the first weeks of the site and not a couple years down the road. Now THAT would be unforgivable. :w00t:
