Why would Palin speak after Obama? I thought they normally went in order of most experienced to least experienced...

I saw him in Arkansas earlier this year and it was just painful. Of the 8 or so quality speakers he was the biggest name and, by far, the least "good". It was the 3rd time I have seen him in a non political speech setting and he was the same each time. He really is a rambling train wreck of a speaker without the help of a great writer. His delivery is fantastic but heaven save us from his writing.

I'm going to give her an A for two primary reasons:
1.) The speech was delivered incredibly well. She did an excellent job of introducing herself and effectively ripped Obama without sounding shrill and "mean". Her timing in terms of humor and sarcasm is just about perfect.
2.) The pressure on her - and the expectation - was massive. She delivered.

I'm going to give Palin a solid A for tonight.
One, she rose above expectations. I think the whole package of speech + delivery was far beyond what anyone would have given her credit for earlier today.
Two, her delivery was masterful. She didn't shout. She didn't drag. She didn't go Speedy Gonzales. She had fantastic pace and tone. It felt like she was carrying a conversation on with a group of friends.
Three, she's got a great speechwriter. There are a few speeches that I wish I had written. Many parts of tonight's speech made me feel that way.
Her speech was the perfect blend of sucker punches delivered with sugar coating. She made some very pointed barbs but said them with a sense of humor, so she didn't come off ugly. Many of her lines were memorable.
I think her tack of coming off as a hockey mom from a small town was genuine. I think it will play well in middle America.
On the flip side of the coin, she knew her stuff on energy and the war. She did not sound nearly as inexperienced as they've tried to portray her this week.
I think she really exceeded expectations. I think the GOP base will love it. I think GOP women will be inspired to make sure they get out and cast a ballot for her. I think she's given moderate Dems and Independents something to think about and someone to like and think about raising their flag for.

One thing I have to say that the GOP is NOT doing anything to cater to moderates. I saw her selection as one of attempting to reel in some of the moderates that McCain got interested, but many of the things at this convention will make them go the other way. At first her selection made me pretty confident in a GOP victory, but now I'm not so sure. Maybe you guys can get me confident again.

She's a base pick who doesn't understand national politics. IMO, the first rule is not to kick the national media in the crouch and say it's because you represent the people. It's a 2nd fight you don't need. When you do so, they dig up pictures of you NOT in a war zone in Bosnia or pictures of you supporting the bridge to no where. It will prompt them to do their job and fact check you.
2nd, she did two speeches. Cleaver on herself, rushed on the policy positions.
I'm looking forward to several things. Her first interviews with the national press, which she seems to be avoiding and the debate.

Selecting her as the VP candidate, shored up the base of the Republican party. Many Republicans were less than thrilled to have McCain as their candidate. In steps Palin and the conservative base is back on board.
The base is what will bring in the added dollars and volunteer time to get out and spread the word about McCain/Palin.
I think it's a great move, but I'm not guaranteeing a victory. I lived in Florida during the 1st Bush victory - anything can happen.

She gave a GREAT speech. It was funny, clever and extremely well-directed. I didn't see her as Presidential at all, however. She came off as one of those people that they usually get to give "personal stories" at these things, just a really good version of it.
That having been said, all she did was go negative. I don't know that she had a positive comment in the whole thing. She said absolutely nothing about the economy, and she seemed to double-down on her own inexperience.
I like her. I think she's genuine. The only part of the speech that offended was the comment on community organizing... That was sorta B.S. I'm a community organizer. I come from a long line of community organizers... (though none professionally)...
And now that I'm going back and looking at the text of the speech again... I'm seeing that most of these comments, when given a second glance, have little or no basis in fact.
I think she will be formidable. I think she'll energize the base and get a lot of rural women to flock back to the Republican Party. I think she might even do more. She's reaaaaally far right, though.
The thing that made me a little sick is that this campaign has been pretty clean and mostly about the issues. Especially when compared to Kerry Bush and Bush Gore...
But no more. The Republicans are going back to the Rove 50 +1 strategy. Obama's trying to win on a unifying ticket.
We'll see who wins. I think this thing is going to get nasty, and that makes me really sad for discourse.

And I'd like to disagree with the "exceeding expectations" portion.
She did exactly what anyone thought she'd do. There's no way that McCain would choose her, with her background, if she wasn't a dynamite campaigner.
Kay Bailey Hutchison would have made a more intelligent choice, IMO, but I don't think Kay Bailey is nearly as dynamic a speaker or have nearly as great a story.
The McCain campaign is clearly out to make this about personality, not issues. I just find that disappointing, because the debate between the issues is actually a little bit more interesting. (especially seeing as how McCain is mostly in line with Bush and the number Bush has done on the economy)

It was admittedly a little heavy on sarcasm but it fit squarely within the legacy of style and tone that Ann Richards perfected. Being a lifelong Texan it set just fine with me, but I can see how it may have played a little less well in more genteel precincts, such as the Midwest.

Kay Bailey's pro-choice. No way that the GOP nominates a pro-choice VP now. Also, Hutchison really wants to be governor.
And I don't really think the Obama camp is so issue-centric, either. Come on, what presidential election ever is? It's all pie in the sky fluff, let's be honest. No one wants to make a soundbite that will tank their political legacy a la "read my lips, no new taxes."

Nicely played!!
I'd accuse you of knowing what you're talking about, but I don't know if I could make it through without laughing.

These are all very well thought out arguments, and I can see the points of all. But to boil it all down, she is just 44 year old hot. She looks just like my favorite girlfriend that I didn't marry. The whole time I was watching that speech, I was thinking about little Jeanie.
Serious question. Does that play in her favor or against her? I think it helps. It is shallow for a voter to think that way, but it probably helps. All those hormonal first time voters might gravitate towards the beautiful.
There is always this classic little barb....

It works for me. After being forced to see Hillary for now 15 years, I deserve to see a hottie when I see political news.

Kay Bailey has a great record and a lot of experience. She would have made a better VP.
And I think you're wrong about the Obama Campaign. They have an actual list of things they want accomplish. An actual list of policies past "extend the Bush tax cuts." I don't think McCain can claim that. And that's frustrating for me because I really want to weigh what's right for the country and best for me.
Oh, and are you REALLY trying to say that Kay Bailey Hutchison wouldn't take the VP if offered to her? You're flipping crazy.

Karl Rove is a lying, fascist, sociopath.
He cares not at all about this country. He only cares about doing what's best for him, which is lining his pockets. The guy's a professional weasel.

My favorite Karl incident involves an interview he gave NPR. Probably didn't want to but the White House crew had kind of an Open House one day and NPR went.
This was just before the mid term elections. Karl was asked about the numbers showing that Dems would regain the House. He replied something like "YOUR numbers may say that but I have THE numbers, and the GOP will retain control of both houses."
Ahahahahahaha! If you're gonna go, go big!
