PRESEASON GOALS: Although Baylor has the backcourt firepower to play at a breakneck pace with most teams, it must improve defensively. The Bears ranked last in the Big 12 in scoring defense with a 74.9-point average last season.

Developing another consistent inside threat to take pressure off F Kevin Rogers is another objective. Rogers ranked fifth in the Big 12 in rebounding (8.5), but his scoring average leveled off by a half-point to 12.3.

2007-08 FINAL RECORD: 21-11, 9-7, fourth in the Big 12.

WHAT WENT RIGHT: Baylor was difficult to defend, using firepower from five guards who were all capable of burning opponents from long range or beating them off the dribble. While the Bears' inside presence led to difficulty on the boards, F Kevin Rogers did his best to negate that disadvantage and was one of the most underrated players in the Big 12.

WHAT WENT WRONG: Too often Baylor seemed content to simply trade baskets with opponents. Sometimes that worked, particularly if the Bears connected from 3-point range. But their inability to get stops hurt in clutch situations and also created sizable deficits when the Bears weren't hitting shots. Underneath, the pressure on Rogers to produce was a burden on the 6-foot-9 junior.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Every program goes through a natural maturation and we have continued to climb and become more successful. Now, instead of being the hunters, we are now becoming the hunted." -- Baylor coach Scott Drew to the Waco Tribune-Herald.
