The question is where will Hurricane Ike be going.

I hate that it took the turn. I thought it might go right and out into the Atlantic.

Prayers to you guys on the coast.

EDIT:

I was just looking at the historicals and the probable tracks W and I found something interesting. First, the current track takes Ike over the top of the length of Cuba. Obviously this plays in our favor in that it slows Ike down. It also creates a high drag factor that typically inspires a storm to turn if pressure systems are present. In this case the pressure would favor a Florida keys turn. Looking at the historical storms that have made this track would also support a Florida turn with Ike going out to sea in the Atlantic. The historicals are below courtesy of Weather Underground.

http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/tracking/at200809_climo.html#a_topad

The thing that worries me most is the GFDL run which I have found to be most accurate. The GFDL has Ike leaving Cuba and getting ticked off, quickly turning to the Texas/LA coast as a Cat 4.

It's not a done deal yet, but take care.

GFDL also has a weird turn and just straight to Texas. One rarely runs straight and Dr. Masters says it should continue North into Alabama once GFDL corrects that turn.

Limnos

One thing seems probable with the models, looking at the sea temps, if this storm does enter the Gulf and doesn't take the Florida turn, it will power up regardless of the track.

In 89 Hugo didn't even slow down when it hit the coast. It came right over this house at 2 am and we were freaking. That one got my attention, and I'll never forget it. To many big trees at my place, and I don't want one in my Kitchen.

My uncle lived where Hugo hit in 89... he worked for CBS at the time, so they were able to go and tape the aftermath the day after. I've seen the tape a few times, and the devastation was saddening.

On a random note, I heard from my mom that in order to prevent hurricanes to focus on Corpus, one of their radio DJs goes through a carwash at the start of hurricane season to emulate the hurricane reporting.

Supposedly it's working.

It would be highly unusual for Ike to remain straight. There is a mega-good chance that he turns towards the north or NNW. That should bring it ashore (todays guess) about where Gustav landed.

Yep, GFDL has it going near Houma again. This one should be larger than Gustav, unless Cuba messes it up.

The water heat energy will jazz Ike right back up. Probably to a 3-4 over water and a solid 2-3 at landfall.

Here is Dr. Masters take on landfall as of this morning.

As Ike moves approaches within 300 miles of the Louisiana coast on Friday, there will be another trough of low pressure capable of turning the storm to the north. The GFS, GFDL, HWRF, NOGAPS, and Canadian models all predict that this trough will be strong enough to turn Ike northwards into central or western Louisiana. The UKMET and ECMWF models disagree, and think high pressure will dominate enough to force Ike westwards into Texas, between Corpus Christi and the Louisiana border. These two models have been trending too far south with Ike so far, so I would lean towards a landfall in western Louisiana at this point.

It looks like, insurance-wise, we're covered on the store. As for the house, well, if it looks like it's coming this way, we'll be deciding what's irreplaceable and putting it in our cars (and my parents' if necessary) and at the least taking it to their place in Katy. I got a little sad earlier today doing a mental list of what I would take with me. Thankfully for us (but not for other folks) it looks like it's heading south of here, but until later in the week, really who the heck knows. It could wobble overnight and be right back on track for coming here.

and looking at the new NHC line it seems the King Ranch is the winner. And really, that could be the best for everyone as there isn't a ton there, besides the ranch. Also, it is a category one and headed toward the mountains of eastern Cuba, which tore Gustav apart as a category four. Any chance it destroys Ike?

Any changes in Ike's path toward Texas? Is it still going toward the Freeport or Corpus Christi area?

http://www.kwtx.com/weather

From Brady Taylor:

Showers are ongoing across parts of Central Texas this morning, and we will continue to see the chance for off and on showers throughout the day. After today the weather will be quite to end out the workweek, but that changes dramatically as we head into the weekend.

Ike is forecast to make landfall early Saturday morning near Corpus Christi as a major hurricane. Where Ike goes from there will have a major impact on our weather here in Central Texas. The latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center brings the slowly weakening storm into Central Texas overnight Saturday into Sunday.

If this path occurs, we would expect the potential for serious weather concerns in Central Texas this weekend. These would include the possibility of flooding rain, high winds, and tornadoes associated with the outer rainbands of the storm. It is still too early to put anything "in stone" and our Doppler 10 Forecast team will continue to monitor the storm's progress with regular updates.

I saw this report last night, and it looks the same this morning.

Any changes in Ike's path toward Texas? Is it still going toward the Freeport or Corpus Christi area?

http://www.kwtx.com/weather

I saw this report last night, and it looks the same this morning.

Well, it's still projected to go in around Matagorda Bay. The UKMET, however, is still showing a little south of Freeport and the UKMET is the model that has been most accurate for this storm so far.

Even if it goes in at Matagorda, we can expect a pretty good storm surge here and some pretty ugly weather as we'll be on the dirty side of the storm. The local folks are saying that if it were to go in even 50 miles north of where most projections are taking it, that would be devastating for Galveston. They issued a voluntary evacuation for the West End yesterday. We live close enough to the West End that our water supply is tied to theirs and if it floods down there, they will likely cut off the water to keep what damage they can down. So we decided last night that the baby and I will go to my parents' house.

We also made up an informal list of what we consider "irreplaceable" and would want to take with us in the event of a storm. I will probably pack those things up today and my dad will come down here Friday morning and put them in his SUV (after one car seat, two dogs, one stroller, one pack and play and a suitcase, there's not a whole lot of room left in my car.

Right now, they really have no idea where this storm is headed. It's been too unpredictable so far and there ara so many complex variables that will affect it (2 high pressure systems, 2 fronts, and water temperature in the Gulf.) We will probably have a more clear picture tomorrow, but may not really know unitl Friday--and it's expected to make landfall overnight Friday/early Saturday (subject to change, of course).

Wacoso and I were talking last night about how weird it is just sitting and waiting, knowing everything will either be fine and it'll be another false alarm/whew we got lucky kind of thing or that our entire life as we know it could be completely gone by this weekend. Luckily, we're insured at the house and the store, and no matter what happens, we'll be fine, but it is weird just waiting knowing you can't do much and knowing that so much could potentially happen.

...large hurricane ike slowly headed northwestward...

At 1000 pm cdt...0300 utc...the tropical storm warning west of key
west to dry tortugas has been discontinued.

A tropical storm warning remains in effect from the mouth of the
mississippi river westward to east of cameron louisiana. A tropical
storm warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected
within the warning area within the next 24 hours.

A hurricane watch remains in effect from cameron louisiana westward
to port mansfield texas. A hurricane watch means that hurricane
conditions are possible within the watch area...generally within 36
hours.

For storm information specific to your area...including possible
inland watches and warnings...please monitor products issued
by your local weather office.

At 1000 pm cdt...0300z...the center of hurricane ike was located
near latitude 24.9 north...longitude 86.7 west or about 675 miles...
1090 km...east of brownsville texas and about 325 miles...525 km...
South-southeast of the mouth of the mississippi river.

Ike is moving toward the northwest near 7 mph...11 km/hr. A turn
back toward the west-northwest is expected tonight or early on
thursday...and a general west-northwestward motion over the central
and western gulf of mexico is expected on thursday and friday.

Data from a noaa hurricane hunter aircraft indicate that maximum
sustained winds remain near 100 mph...160 km/hr...with higher
gusts. Ike is a category two hurricane on the saffir-simpson scale.
Although fluctuations in strength are possible during the next
couple of days...gradual strengthening is forecast during this
period...and ike could become a major hurricane on thursday or
friday.

Ike is a large tropical cyclone. Hurricane force winds extend
outward up to 115 miles...185 km...from the center...and tropical
storm force winds extend outward up to 230 miles...370 km.

The minimum central pressure just reported by the noaa hurricane
hunter aircraft was 944 mb...27.88 inches.

Coastal storm surge flooding along the coast of cuba and in the
florida keys should continue to subside tonight. Coastal storm
surge flooding of 3 to 5 feet above normal tide levels...along with
large and dangerous battering waves...can be expected within the
tropical storm warning area. Above normal tides of 2 to 4 feet are
expected elsewhere along much of the northern coast of the gulf of
mexico during the next day or so...but will be increasing along the
western gulf coast as ike approaches.

Ike is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of 6 to 12
inches over western cuba...with isolated maximum amounts of up to
20 inches possible. These rains are likely to cause
life-threatening flash floods and mud slides over mountainous
terrain. Rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are possible over

Mandatory evacuation was just issued for Galveston 15 minutes ago. They are predicting widespread problems and devastation of infrastructure. The west end is already flooding. We are leaving in about 10 minutes, and Wacoso will leave as soon as the store is secure (not that it may matter much in the end.) Praise God, though, everything we wanted to take fit into my dad's SUV--with the exception of the baby's swing and one box, which will fit in Wacoso's truck along with suitcases of clothes.

Also, pray for our next door neighbor. Her grandmother died 2 days ago and her mother is just having a difficult time already and now this, and she is having a hard time leaving.

I wish I had seen this thread earlier.

I probably could have offered some advice, above and beyond the normal, when dealing with a particular insurance carrier, including most of the tactics that are used.

This advice is born from years of experience as an independent consultant/expert witness in court and the same as a general manager of a national restoration company that has experienced many a hurricane (at least 10 majors).

On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the most client friendly, this particular carrier is a negative 10 in my opinion. So accurate, that they are the only carrier out of THOUSANDS that we will simply not do work for.

If you'd like those pieces of advice, which some may not possible at this time, send a PM.

Hopefully, I've been specific enough for the intended target to realize I'm talking to them, but general enough to avoid any legal repercussions.

P.S. It doesn't matter how friendly your agent is. They will not be the personnel handling your case nor have any influence on the process.

Dear Lord have mercy. I have never seen a governmental warning like this. This comes from the Galveston National Weather Service office.

http://www.wunderground.com/US/TX/Galveston.html

All neighborhoods... and possibly entire coastal communities... will be inundated during high tide. Persons not heeding evacuation orders in single family one or two story homes will face certain death. Many residences of average construction directly on the coast will be destroyed. Widespread and devastating personal property damage is likely elsewhere. Vehicles left behind will likely be swept away. Numerous roads will be swamped... some may be washed away by the water. Entire flood prone coastal communities will be cutoff. Water levels may exceed 9 feet for more than a mile inland. Coastal residents in multi-story facilities risk being cutoff. Conditions will be worsened by battering waves. Such waves will exacerbate property damage... with massive destruction of homes... including those of block construction. Damage from beach erosion could take years to repair.

It is so hard to imagine the feelings people are having. I know that mrs nein talked to BC today and I talked to her via text but Im not sure a person can really explain how it feels to know in their gut that in 2-3 days there is the very real chance their home wont be there.

I am 100% sure that the islanders on this board know that many on here are happy to have you in our homes. It isnt home...but I hope it is the next best thing (or close to it after family).

When this is over and the water goes back where it belongs you guys just let me know what you need. I have a ton of vacation left and I cant think of a better way to spend it than to help you get things back to normal.

News up here in yankeedom said that the storm looks like it won't get above a 2... because it's so large, it's having trouble getting more organized. But there is a slight chance that it will become a 3 right before landfall.

They disconnected the webcam.

I went up there at 8am this morning and boarded up the store with the help of Brandon and his crew. Took about an hour of sawing, hammering, and drilling. Then I moved all the merchandise to as high a point as I could and our MGR boxed up the small items. Turned off the electricity, took the registers, credit card machines, and locked it up. Went home, loaded up our belongings, had a bite to eat, said goodbye, and hit the road. Took HWY 6 all the way up to 290 and only 290 had bad traffic. Sugarland had some stop and go stuff, but mostly just people on their usual day.

Stopped in C/S and ate at Freebird's with BBL and had a Shiner toast to friends and safety. Texted WillThing until he gave in and decided to leave. Michael and Adrienne say they are staying, per WillThing. Please pray for them as well. I don't handle losing friends well and they are great to us all.

Arrived in Waco around 9pm, unloaded, sat down, and thought of what all can be, could be, and most likely will.

Now, I'm watching the surfcam and the waves are over the jetty on 37th, which is very rare. Also, a 51 foot wave was observed 180 miles offshore. If you think this is a small hurricane, well...

Love you guys and gals and appreciate all the prayers from each of you. Don't forget there are plenty more that need them on the coast.

I pulled up around 8 and it was covering 50% of the parking lot. At 11ish when I left it had circled the building. As I've told Kristen, I have her, I have our baby, we all have our health, we have our faith, we have our family, and we have our friends. All the rest is secondary.

It is a very sobering experience to know that something so large and powerful can (possibly) cause such destruction to your home, but we love it there. We live Galveston. You either get it or you leave. We get it. We work it. We support it. Gonna be hard for me to go back, if it hits, without breaking down and seeing the destruction of some great places that gave us great memories.

I can almost see Crazy Oaks floating off into the bay. I can see Gaido's full of water due to the storm surge. I can see our pavilion collapsing under the weight of water and wind. I told you to go to the game, silly. We'd be there, but that it's just too hard to travel with her in the level of traffic that there is. (And of course, we can't leave now. Tropical storm winds here in a matter of hours, and I certainly don't want to be in a car for that!)

The immediate good news is we should only see winds of 60 mph or so with 4 inches of rain here in Katy, from midnight to about 9 am tomorrow. Just west of here (Brookshire/Sealy) it's predicted to be far less, so we should be okay here. We have plenty of supplies to take care of us here for a while and the neighbor has 2 generators he said we can pull off of, so that's good.

Hun, if you can source a generator or two in Waco, though, that would be good to bring back (plus maybe some gas to run it with). I think we'll be needing that when we go back home to start picking up stuff.

And why in the world are Mikey and Adrienne staying????

I doubt they let us back on for several days, honestly. There will be downed power lines all over the place and it will take a while for floodwaters to recede. I don't see us getting in until midweek, honestly. But if we can go in earlier, we'll load up that new Yukon!

Four feet of water in the Strand already. Waves hitting Seawall are splashing ABOVE the light poles. West End is pretty much destroyed already according to city officials. City Manager said that destruction-wise, this will be the worst since the 1900 storm--worse than 1915, Carla, Alicia, etc. Storm is speeding up and now expected to make landfall near Bolivar around midnight as opposedto San Luis Pass at 2 or 3 am.

Just saw the depth of water at Moody Gardens near our house. Highly likely water is in or about to be in our house now.

On KHOU a couple hours ago, this woman was interviewed with her 4 kids saying she "couldn't" leave because she had animals and kids and she didn't want to leave and come back to nothing.

Well guess what lady, you staying in the house won't make it not destroyed. I almost yelled at my tv for the kids' safety.

Yeah, lady, your house may be there but you and your kids may not be. Or your kids may be so traumatized by going through the storm that you'll be paying for therapy for years.

The St Louis has a number of really high up floors, I cannot imagine the water will get that high. If it does we will have more problems. As in, Houston may be completely flooded. I think it would HAVE to get 80+ feet up to engulf that hotel.

Pete's a stubborn youknowwhat. That's why he stayed.

Steve LeBlanc, city manager, just estimated 40% of the population (about 22K) decided to stay. God only knows why.

I have no idea why anyone would challenge Ike. When, for the first time that I can recall, the NWS says those who remain will face certain death, it's a stupid move. Or, in this case, stupid non-move.

I dont see how that is possible. The girl in Clearlake is reporting from the Hilton parking lot and Nasa Rd 1 is open. From where she is reporting Kemah is no more than .5 miles across the lake. I suppose the very lower portion where nothing is located could be but from what I can see it cant be any portion of the boardwalk where people go.

That was why I had to ask because that part came from a Yahoo news article.

There is a link in an early post that I put up in this thread, and that link is from the Houston Chronicle. They had this picture of two people walking waist-deep in water in Kemah. (picture #21)

nein51

I suppose it could be, they just showed the area and there is flooding around the hotel. Doesnt look deeper than 3' (not that I want 3' of water in my house) but I wonder where they were on Kemah. Perhaps they were in one of the low lying parking lots. I would think Clearlake would be just a giant lake right now if the boardwalk were 3 foot deep.

Oh my gosh, that's awesome!!! We have been told by our friend who is a police officer that the bottom of the building (mostly storage area for beach patrol, chair vendor, park board, etc) is completely destroyed--which means our A/C units are likely gone too, and that the wooden stairs on the front of the building are gone too. But this is the best picture I've seen all day.

The Island is closed. Only people there are first responders, media, and those who stayed (estimated 40% of the Island's population). We will not be allowed back in until they say we can come back, and there's no indication of when that will be.
